For the ninth time now, coffee roaster Tchibo is publishing its coffee report on the coffee consumption behaviour of Germans. The report is based on a representative survey of 5000 coffee drinkers in Germany, which was created in cooperation with the business magazine "brand eins" and the online portal "Statista". This year, the focus of the 100-page document is "Coffee and Responsibility".

Coffee is the favourite drink of Germans and is becoming more and more popular: 89.1 percent drink it daily - that is about three percentage points more than last year. On average, 3.6 cups are drunk per day, or 166 litres per year and per capita. The North Rhine-Westphalians drink the most coffee per day with 4.1 cups, the Bavarians the least with 3.3 cups per day. In Germany, the fully automatic coffee machine is used most often for preparation, with 80.4 percent.

Responsibility is also an issue for coffee drinkers in offices: 23 percent offer their employees sustainable coffee. The main reason for doing without sustainable coffee is the price - 60.4 percent find it too expensive. People with children in the household drink more sustainable coffee: 41.7 percent drink it every day; only 30.8 percent do so when there are no children in the household.

Since more and more outlets are offering coffee in disposable cups, such as McDonalds' McCafé or Aldi and Lidl self-service machines, the use of returnable cups has risen by 53 per cent since 2018. In order to avoid unnecessary waste, almost half of them are therefore actively doing without disposable cups for their coffee-to-go. 28.9 percent even use a returnable cup. Two years ago, that was only 18.9 percent.

After a technical study in 2005 he went to a repair center for electrical appliances. When there was a lot of coffee, many coffee machines were dismantled and analysed. Since then he shares his knowledge online. A real coffee junkie.
