Docklands Coffee Äthiopien Yirgacheffe Grade 2

Manufacturer product description

Ethiopia is the original home of coffee. In the southwest of the country, in the province of Kaffa, you can still find wild coffee in unique variety. Legend has it that the first coffee bushes grew there in the midst of the shady mountain forests on the high plateaus. The pitch-black Bunna is said to have spread all over the world from the small town of Togola, just ten kilometres from the provincial capital Bonga. Bunna, that's ampharic for coffee. Over the past 30 years, 60 percent of Ethiopian forests have disappeared. Ethiopia is synonymous with droughts and famines. But there are now also numerous projects to protect wild coffee in Ethiopia. Wildly growing and cultivated coffee shrubs cover an estimated 400,000 hectares in Ethiopia. Producing pure, high-quality wild coffee is not easy. Depending on the source, 5 to 10 percent of Ethiopian coffee comes from wild growth. Far more frequently, namely to 35 percent, is the so-called Semi Forest coffee to be found. Because the forest is lightly thinned for the wild, existing and subsequently planted coffee shrubs, high-quality qualities are easier to achieve with this cultivation method. Nevertheless, the potential of the primary forest is largely preserved and fertilisation is completely dispensed with. Many Ethiopian farmers now earn their main income from Semi Forest coffee. Nationally, about 60 percent of all Ethiopian export revenue comes from the coffee business.
