Langen Kaffee Espresso Brasil Sao Silvestre

Manufacturer product description

Hospital coffee is the name of a relief project in Brazil that provides free medical care to destitute people in the Cerrado region (state of Minas Gerais). In Brazil there is no state health insurance, so that people without appropriate financial means or private supplementary insurance are hardly treated and cared for. The project was initiated by Ismael Andrade, owner of the Fazenda Sao Silvestre coffee plantation, who as a member of the local Rotary club has been the honorary financial president of the Santa Casa hospital in Carmo do Paranaiba for many years. The hospital is run by the Rotary Club and is financed by donations and government funds. Part of the proceeds from the sale of green coffee goes directly to the hospital. The idea for this project came from Ismael Andrade and the German coffee merchant Thomas Stehl. Of the approximately 5,000 to 7,000 euros that are raised annually through the sale of hospital coffee, one or two nurses, for example, can be paid. But also new technical equipment, such as a mammography device, could be purchased from the donations. In 2009 Klaus Langen himself was on site, in 2010 Matthias Winkelmann, roasting master of Langen Kaffee, visited the hospital. Both have informed themselves intensively about the medical care in the Santa Casa hospital and were convinced of the team and its achievements. Over the next few years, a larger part of the equipment will have to be renewed and modernised. Thanks to the support of German roasters such as Langen Kaffee and other roasting colleagues, financial security and donations for hospital costs will continue to exist.
