The Ngiriambu Farmers Cooperative Society is located in Kirinyaga district along the slopes of Mount Kenya, Kenya's highest mountain and Africa's second highest mountain. The area is well suited for coffee cultivation with nutrient-rich volcanic soils from the time when Mount Kenya was still an active volcano. The cooperative includes some 2,500 small farmers, all of whom bring their coffee cherries to one of the cooperative's two wet processing plants. These are located on the banks of two rivers whose crystal clear water comes from the forests on the slopes of Mount Kenya. The Kegwa and Kiri rivers also give the processing plants their names.
