It is one of three processing plants (Kii, Kiangoi and Karimikui) that form the centre of the Rungeto Farmers Coop Society. This cooperation was established in 1953 and now has 3,507 members. Each shareholder owns about 1 ha of land on which he can plant his coffee and various vegetables for the families. The region is characterised by its rich and fertile soil consisting of red volcanic soil and has an average rainfall of 1,600-1,900mm per year. Kenyan coffee is traditionally sold through the typical Kenyan auction system. Meanwhile, however, direct trade is also supported by law and farmers can contact specialty roasters all over the world. We have opted for this very system of direct trade to ensure fair payment for coffee farmers.
